30 Day Otome Challenge - Favourite Game (1)
↳ Dandelion ~ Wishes Brought to You - The demo of the game left me utterly unsuspecting. It seemed like a cliche setup with a girl and some animals that could transform into humans. Not alone was I proven completely wrong, but I got my heart shattered and stomped on in the process.
30 Day Otome Challenge - Favorite Girlfriends
Okay, so I know this section is probably meant for girl friendships and not shippy and there are many many friendships that are contenders that I do want to talk about, I decided to go for this ship instead because sfjksjdhgk they’re so beautiful. Admittedly I should probably wait for Kaguya’s full game to come out first before I make the decision that they’re my favorite but as it is, from both Menou’s game and the short story they released on the official site, these two have struck me hard and fast and shot up to OTP status for this game..
I’ll try to be short lest I spoil but I’ve always loved the combination of pairing of the dark morally dubious character and the more morally idealistic character, especially when one of them is a character who will gladly ruin themselves and screw other people over for the sake of making that person they love happy and Kaguya and Menou fits that dysfunctional relationship dynamic to a T. They admire each other, idolize each other, want the other to be successful and both of them care about each other deeply, even when they know they shouldn’t due to the nature of their status as queen candidates - people who are fated to become rivals and fight each other for the throne.
Special mentions for other contenders for this section were Momotose from Hana Awase, Karen & Miyo from Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 3, Miyako from Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 5 and Vivaldi from Heart no Kuni no Alice.
In response to our fandom’s thing with “strong/weak” MCs, I made a get-to-know-the-otome-gamer/blogger thing to help you assert your taste in MCs without dissing other MCs! And stuff. Bold your answers.1. What is your relationship with the MC?
I am MC’s matchmaker/puppet master/(in dating sims) personal stylist/(in racy otoge) voyeur/etc.
I do a bit of both
Anything goes2. Preferred trait(s) in MCs?
Diabolical3. Voiced MCs?

PECS AND SPECS SNATCHING MY KA-CHING
Eh6. Are you a completionist?
Depends on how the wind blows7. Long story short, how bawdy are you?
Mind in the gutter
Mind is the gutter
The gutter is my disciple
I’m not8. How do you like your routes/endings?
I want a harem of 3000
The only one who can date me is meBONUS! One thing you want from otome games:
long relationship-building processes in which I can fall in love with the character(s) the same way MC does
There is a shocking lack of Hakuouki valentines, so I took the liberty of making some for everyone.
Please enjoy them.
So recently there’s been a lot of hate directed at the heroine from the upcoming game, Gakuen K. For a rebuttal of that stupidity, I recommend reading this excellent post by danceanddestroy.
The complaints I see lobbed at this character are complaints I see thrown at any number of MCs; complaints that are not based on an individual personality within the context of its circumstances, but instead based on cultural differences, subjective taste, and and the basic tenants of characterization (like a heroine daring to have flaws!).
For a basic outline of some of the differences in cultural expectations of gender and relationships in Japan, I suggest reading this awesome article by romancingpixels.
For everything else, all I want to say is this:
Women shouldn’t have to be written to meet your standard of acceptable for you to respect them. Strength comes in more than one form and I am sick of this fandom’s narrow definition of what a “strong women” is, and even more so knowing it isn’t willing to apply the same standard to the male characters/love interests.
I am tired of reading posts bashing heroines (ps. don’t tag your hate) for not being a STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN (c) who kick boxes or carries a gun or is an unbelievable sass master. I’m not begrudging people’s preferences or enjoyment of a certain character type, I’m annoyed by the fact that one type is seen as inherently superior to another. We allow love interests to have diverse and varying personalities but our Heroine’s can only ever be one thing? (or, more accurately, can never be a certain thing?)
Strength can be defined mentally, emotional, and physically, and all three are equally important. STOP CRITICIZING FEMALE CHARACTERS FOR SIMPLY BEING WHO THEY ARE.
There are enough constraints on female characters as it is; stop creating more arbitrary hoops for them to jump through.
